Mechanism
Inhibition
TL;DR
Dominant companies can suppress new entrants through resource monopolization, but cannot prevent succession indefinitely.
Early species prevent later species from establishing while alive. Pioneer trees monopolize light - shade-tolerant seeds germinate but don't grow (waiting). Dense grasses monopolize space - tree seedlings can't establish (suppressed). Later species must wait for pioneers to die or for disturbance (fire, wind) to create gaps.
Business Application of Inhibition
Dominant companies can suppress new entrants through resource monopolization, but cannot prevent succession indefinitely. Competitors wait for disturbance (technology shift, regulation, crisis) to create gaps.
