Early Burst Pattern
AWS and Berkshire both show early-burst patterns: rapid initial diversification followed by slowdown as major niches fill.
Adaptive radiations show rapid initial diversification - speciation rate is initially very high, then slows as niches fill. This creates a decelerating pattern: early in radiation, new species arise quickly; later, speciation slows or stops. Caribbean anoles independently evolved the same ecomorphs on each island, with most diversification occurring early. Mathematical models formalize this as diversity-dependent slowdown: λ(n) = λ0 × (1 - n/K).
Business Application of Early Burst Pattern
AWS and Berkshire both show early-burst patterns: rapid initial diversification followed by slowdown as major niches fill. Later diversification shifts toward specialization within categories or mega-acquisitions rather than numerous new ventures.
