Some species don't just survive disturbance - they require it. Lodgepole pine has serotinous cones that require fire heat to open and release seeds. Coastal redwoods have 30cm fire-resistant bark and resprout from base after fire. Eucalyptus is fire-tolerant with rapid post-fire regrowth. Without periodic fire, these species get outcompeted by fire-intolerant but shade-tolerant species.
