Chuzhou

TL;DR

Chuzhou turns Nanjing spillover into scale: a 4.056 million-person bridge city where cheaper land and delta logistics compound into durable manufacturing gravity.

City in Anhui

Chuzhou is where Nanjing's manufacturing overflow goes to become permanent. The city sits 24 metres above sea level in eastern Anhui, a short rail hop from Jiangsu, and had 4.056 million permanent residents at the end of 2024. It produced ¥403.44 billion ($56.0 billion) of GDP that year. Officially it is an Anhui prefecture city. In practice it is one of the Yangtze River Delta's most effective spillover machines.

That is the Wikipedia gap. Chuzhou's growth is less about local glamour than about adjacency to stronger neighbours. It belongs to Nanjing's one-hour metropolitan circle and the Yangtze River Delta integration zone, which means factories priced out of core Jiangsu can cross the provincial line without leaving the supply web. BSH Home Appliances has spent years building Chuzhou into its largest global production site by area, with dishwasher, refrigerator, and laundry plants clustered together. That is niche construction at industrial scale: once one anchor builds a full production habitat, suppliers, logistics firms, and vocational training follow.

Source-sink dynamics explain the city's role. Capital, technology, and orders from Nanjing and the wider delta move into Chuzhou because land and labour are cheaper, but the finished products stay inside the same regional economy. Network effects then harden the arrangement. Chuzhou's 2024 statistics show 2,807 industrial firms above designated size, second-highest in Anhui, and fixed-asset investment grew 7.4%. A bridge city stops looking peripheral once enough firms decide the bridge is the destination.

The biological parallel is slime mold. Slime molds solve spatial problems by extending themselves along efficient routes between food sources, then thickening the paths that work. Chuzhou does the same inside the Yangtze River Delta. Provincial on a map, strategic in a network, it thrives by finding the cheapest route between rich markets and scalable production.
