Meiosis

A type of cell division that produces gametes (sex cells) with half the normal chromosome number. Unlike mitosis, meiosis introduces genetic variation through recombination.

Biological Context

Meiosis involves two divisions, reducing chromosome number from diploid to haploid. During meiosis, homologous chromosomes exchange segments (crossing over), creating new genetic combinations. This genetic shuffling is a major source of variation in sexually reproducing species.

Business Application

Meiosis-like processes in business: spin-offs and joint ventures that combine elements from parent organizations in new combinations. The resulting entity has 'genetic material' from both parents but is a new, distinct entity.
