Proactive interference
Origin: Underwood, 1957
Biological Parallel
Migrating birds using old routes struggle to learn new ones—previously established pathways actively compete with new learning, creating interference. Proactive interference reveals that strong early memories aren't just persistent, they actively inhibit formation of conflicting patterns. This is path dependence at the neural level: the brain's first solution to a problem establishes highways that make alternative routes harder to build, even when conditions change.
