Permission Marketing

Origin: Seth Godin (1999)

Biological Parallel

Cleaner fish don't force grooming on clients—they signal availability through dance displays, and clients approach voluntarily. Permission-based interactions build trust and repeat business; aggressive approaches trigger avoidance. The biological marketplace operates on consent: mutualisms persist when both parties opt in repeatedly. Spam is the biological equivalent of parasitism—it extracts value without permission, triggering immune responses (spam filters, unsubscribes). Permission isn't courtesy; it's the foundation of sustainable exchange.
