The Restaurant at the End of the Universe

by Douglas Adams (1980)

★★★★★ 5/5

Fine dining at the literal end of time itself

"The History of every major Galactic Civilization tends to pass through three distinct and recognizable phases, those of Survival, Inquiry and Sophistication, otherwise known as the How, Why, and Where phases. For instance, the first phase is characterized by the question 'How can we eat?' the second by the question 'Why do we eat?' and the third by the question 'Where shall we have lunch?'"

— Douglas Adams

My Review

The sequel continues to have absolutely no relevance to business strategy. You will learn nothing about competitive dynamics, resource allocation, or organisational design. You will, however, learn about the worst poetry in the universe and why you should never let a depressed robot park your spaceship. Highly recommended.

Why It Matters

Still nothing. If anything, even less than the first book. But the bit about the cow that recommends which cut of itself to order is genuinely unsettling.

Key Ideas

  • The best way to get a drink is to have someone else order it
  • The universe will end, but you can watch while having a nice meal
  • Marketing has reached its logical conclusion: cows that want to be eaten
  • The meaning of life remains elusive, but the food is excellent

How It Connects to This Framework

Your lunch break. That's about it.
