Pilot whales represent the marine parallel to elephant matriarchal knowledge systems. These matriarchs guide pods across vast ocean territories, remembering productive feeding grounds, safe calving areas, and migration routes accumulated over 60+ year lifespans. The business parallel is striking. Pilot whale matriarchs function as institutional memory in environments where conditions change across decades. A matriarch who survived a period of prey scarcity in a particular region 40 years ago carries irreplaceable information about alternative routes.
