Mountain Gorilla

Mountain gorillas demonstrate silverback prosocial leadership in perhaps its purest form. Troops follow a single dominant silverback who leads through protection, direction, and conflict mediation rather than constant aggression. The silverback's authority derives from his demonstrated value to the group—protection from predators, mediation of internal conflicts, and leading to food sources.

Group cohesion exceeds other great apes. Unlike chimpanzees with fission-fusion dynamics, mountain gorilla troops stay together continuously. The silverback maintains this cohesion through consistent, predictable behavior. Group members know where they stand, what behaviors are acceptable, and what the silverback will do in various situations. This predictability creates psychological security.

Conflict mediation reveals leadership quality. When disputes arise between group members, the silverback intervenes—not always supporting the dominant individual but often supporting the victim of aggression. This policing behavior reduces within-group conflict and maintains stability. Poor silverbacks who fail to mediate effectively see groups fragment.

Succession creates temporary instability. When silverbacks die or age out, troops may split or be taken over by outside males. The transition period involves elevated stress and sometimes infanticide. This vulnerability during succession demonstrates how much group stability depends on the silverback's personal leadership.
