Leafcutter ants are farmers. They don't eat the leaves they cut - they use them to cultivate fungus gardens underground. The ants provide the fungus with fresh substrate and protect it from pathogens; the fungus converts indigestible plant material into nutritious food the ants can eat. This agricultural mutualism evolved 50-60 million years ago, making ants farmers long before humans.

The farming operation requires industrial-scale coordination. A single leafcutter colony can contain 8 million workers in hundreds of fungus chambers. Foraging ants cut and carry leaves; smaller workers process leaves into pulp; tiny workers tend the fungus gardens. Division of labor is so extreme that different worker sizes are morphologically specialized for their tasks - they're not interchangeable.

The ants protect their fungus monoculture through chemical and behavioral defenses. When foreign fungal spores contaminate gardens, worker ants physically remove them. Special bacteria on ant exoskeletons produce antibiotics that suppress garden pathogens. The ants evolved their own integrated pest management millions of years before humans invented the concept.
