Darwin's hawk moth was predicted by Darwin in 1862 based on his observation of the Malagasy star orchid's 30cm nectar spur. He reasoned a pollinator with matching tongue length must exist. Forty years later, the moth was discovered with exactly the predicted tongue length.
This co-evolution - moth evolving longer tongue to access excluded nectar, flower evolving longer spurs to exclude short-tongued visitors - creates absolute mutual dependence. The subspecies name 'praedicta' honors Darwin's prediction.
