Freeze Tolerance
Selective freezing protects critical systems while allowing non-critical systems to shut down.
Freeze tolerance allows organisms to survive partial freezing by controlling where ice forms. The Wood Frog freezes solid in winter - 65% of body water turns to ice, heart stops, brain activity ceases. Liver produces 100× normal glucose quantities flooding cells as antifreeze; ice forms in extracellular spaces but not inside cells. Cost: 40% of stored glycogen for glucose production, 30% for thawing, emerging with 70% energy depletion. The frog doesn't prevent freezing - it controls where freezing occurs.
Business Application of Freeze Tolerance
Selective freezing protects critical systems while allowing non-critical systems to shut down. Temperature regulation isn't binary (hot/cold) but selective (what to keep warm, what to let freeze).
