Commensalism

TL;DR

Barnacles ride whales for free. YouTube creators who monetize off-platform are doing the same thing - benefiting from the whale's distribution while avoiding the costs of dependence.

By Alex Denne

Commensalism: One organism benefits, the other is unaffected. Barnacles attach to whales, getting transportation across oceans. The whale doesn't care.

Business Application of Commensalism

In commensal business relationships, one party benefits while the other is neutral. This is more common than true mutualism but less valuable. The risk is that commensal relationships can drift toward parasitism if the 'neutral' party starts bearing hidden costs.
