Mechanism

Clustering Coefficient

TL;DR

High organizational clustering creates resilience (teams can function even if key members are absent) but risks silos (information doesn't escape the cluster).

Network Metrics

Clustering coefficient measures how tightly-knit a node's neighborhood is - do your neighbors also connect to each other? Mathematically: C = (number of triangles) / (number of possible triangles). High clustering (~0.3-0.6 in neural networks) means strong local cohesion; low clustering means the node is a central connector bridging otherwise disconnected groups.

C. elegans neural network shows clustering coefficient ~0.3-0.5, meaning 30-50% of a neuron's neighbors are also connected to each other.

Business Application of Clustering Coefficient

High organizational clustering creates resilience (teams can function even if key members are absent) but risks silos (information doesn't escape the cluster). Low clustering creates bottlenecks but enables information brokerage between disparate groups.
