Quy Nhon's next landmark is not another beach resort but a 93-hectare AI district built for 20,000 tech workers. The coastal city sits only 7 metres above sea level in Binh Dinh province and has a verified 2024 population of about 578,600, well above the older GeoNames figure. Officially Quy Nhon is known for beaches, fishing, and central Vietnam tourism.
What that postcard misses is the scale of the province's technology bet. In August 2024, the FPT Quy Nhon consortium broke ground on an AI center and supporting urban area worth more than VND4.362 trillion ($173 million). The project is designed as a research, education, and auxiliary urban complex rather than a single office block. In 2025, Binh Dinh approved another VND1.107 trillion road to connect the Quy Hoa science-and-education zone with the Long Van AI urban area, tying the beach city more tightly to a science corridor that already includes research centers and software facilities. Quy Nhon is not abandoning tourism. It is trying to stack a second identity on top of it: part resort economy, part technology campus for the central coast.
Bamboo is the right organism for Quy Nhon. Bamboo grows quickly because it expands from an established root network rather than starting from bare ground each time. Quy Nhon is attempting the urban equivalent. Adaptive radiation matters because a city known for leisure is branching into AI, research, and training. Phase transitions matter because once the road, urban land, and anchor tenants are in place, the city can shift from isolated projects to a recognisable cluster. Costly signaling matters because a VND4.362 trillion AI district is an expensive way of telling investors and engineers that Binh Dinh intends this pivot to be real.
