Kirikkale

TL;DR

Turkey built Kırıkkale around arms factories; a 193,000-person city still anchors defense production and a 5.4 million-tonne refinery, gaining strategic weight through risky specialization.

City in Kirikkale

Kırıkkale is one of the few Turkish cities that was effectively assembled around an arms complex rather than grown from an old market town. When the republic began laying the Top ve Mühimmat works in 1925 and added brass, steel, rifle, and powder factories between 1928 and 1936, the settlement that had been a small dependency of Keskin became the production spine of Turkey's military industry.

Today the provincial capital sits 731 metres above central Anatolia at a road-and-rail hinge often described as a crossroads for 43 provinces. The Merkez district has about 193,000 residents, and the city still serves systems larger than itself. Tüpraş says its Kırıkkale refinery, commissioned in 1986 and expanded to 5.4 million tonnes a year, supplies Ankara plus a wide swath of inland Turkey. MKE, the state arms manufacturer whose roots are in the city's original factories, is now putting $818 million into new propellant and ammunition capacity in Kırıkkale.

The Wikipedia version of Kırıkkale is that it is an industrial Anatolian city. The more useful truth is that it behaves like a national-security company town. Anadolu Ajansı notes that Turkey's first weapons-specialized organized industrial zone was planted here in 2014, extending the same industrial logic rather than replacing it. A 2025 municipal commission report says the local economy is still concentrated in defense manufacturing and a thin service base, a mix that raises unemployment and pushes younger residents toward larger cities. That matters because the city's second big pillar, the refinery, also exists to feed outside demand rather than create a broad local market. One campus turns crude into fuel for inland Turkey; another turns steel and chemicals into munitions for the state. Kırıkkale is important because it is specialized, and vulnerable for the same reason.

The biological parallel is niche construction by a beaver colony. One engineering organism reshapes the habitat, and after the channels, dams, and ponds exist, later activity keeps flowing through the same terrain. Kırıkkale shows path dependence, keystone-species dynamics, and resource allocation at city scale: the original state factories built the habitat, and every later investment still has to decide whether to diversify the ecosystem or reinforce the dam.

Underappreciated Fact

Kırıkkale's urban core took shape around republic-era munitions plants laid down from 1925 onward, not around an older commercial center.
