Tanga controls Tanzania's second-largest port and serves as the northern development corridor terminus. The port expanded from 700,000 to 1.2 million tonnes annual capacity in 2017. The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) from Uganda's Lake Albert basin will terminate here, creating a petroleum export gateway. The region historically dominated global sisal production (government targeted 120,000 tonnes by 2024). Tanga's Special Economic Zone and Export Processing Zone status offers tax incentives for investors. The railroad connection and Kenya border proximity make it a strategic alternative to Dar es Salaam for northern Tanzania trade.
