Kagera produces 90% of Tanzania's robusta coffee in the Kyerwa and Karagwe districts at 800-900 meters elevation along Lake Victoria. The Karagwe District Cooperative Union dominates direct coffee exports (62% market share), while Kagera Cooperative Union holds 13%. With 90% of the population farming, the region's economy centers on coffee, tea, cotton, tobacco, and vanilla as cash crops. Lake Victoria covers 29% of the regional area (11,885 km²), providing fishing grounds and natural harbor access. The region borders Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi—making it a crossroads for Great Lakes regional trade.
