Dodoma Region

Dodoma is completing a 50-year capital relocation from Dar es Salaam—with 25,039 civil servants and 65 institutions now transferred. The city's built-up area grew 440% since 2000 (11 km² to 60 km²), outpacing population growth. The $5 billion Magufuli City project will create a new administrative zone 17km from Dodoma across 617 hectares. The World Bank's $200 million DIST project (approved 2025) will generate 10,000+ jobs in urban transport. In July 2024, Dodoma officially surpassed Arusha as Tanzania's third-largest city—demonstrating how political will can overcome path-dependence in capital location.
