Craiova

TL;DR

A city of 298,488 where one plant built 230,332 vehicles in 11 months, Craiova lives by the supplier ecosystem that forms around an export-heavy automotive anchor.

City in Dolj County

By Alex Denne

Craiova has 298,488 residents, yet one factory there can build almost as many vehicles as the city has people. The capital of Dolj County sits at 105 metres on the Jiu plain and is usually introduced as Oltenia's cultural centre or as a former socialist industrial hub. The better description is that Craiova has become Romania's southwestern relay for cars, batteries, and the supplier web that follows them.

Ford Otosan's plant gives the scale away. In the first 11 months of 2025 it assembled 230,332 vehicles in Craiova, and 186,930 of them, 81.16%, went abroad. In the first nine months alone, the plant ran at 82% capacity and built 184,678 vehicles, including 68,880 Courier models as Craiova pushed deeper into electrified production. Ford Otosan says it has invested EUR 500 million ($540 million) in the site since 2022, including a battery assembly line that helped launch the first electric vehicles manufactured in Romania. Craiova City Hall's own investment dossier makes the ecological point without using the vocabulary: large firms like Ford and Honeywell pull in suppliers, shape dual-education partnerships, and make other investors cluster nearby. The High-Tech Industry Park on the city's eastern side is already at 100% occupancy with 48 residents expected to create 2,540 jobs.

That is why Craiova matters beyond local pride. It is not simply a city with a car plant. It is a city whose labour market, schools, logistics, and industrial parks have been rewired around a single export engine. When the anchor firm changes platform from combustion models to EVs, the whole urban production system shifts with it.

Biologically, Craiova behaves like landscape organized around an elephant. One very large organism does not dominate by numbers alone; it changes routes and opportunities for smaller species. Keystone-species dynamics fit because the Ford platform supports a much larger supplier habitat. Positive feedback loops appear as each new supplier, training partnership, and logistics improvement makes the city slightly more attractive for the next one. Phase transitions describe the jump from legacy assembly to batteries and electric models.
