Municipality of Rosoman
Heart of Tikveš wine country producing grapes for the region generating 83% of national wine output and $65 million in exports.
Rosoman exists in the heart of Tikveš, the wine-producing plain that generates 83% of North Macedonia's wine output. This municipality of 3,796 residents covers 134 square kilometers in the Vardar Statistical Region—among the country's smaller municipalities by both area and population, yet positioned within the viticultural zone that contributes 17-20% of national agricultural GDP.
The formation era established Rosoman as a typical lowland village in the Tikveš basin, where climate and soil combine to favor grape cultivation. The municipality borders wine centers Gradsko (north), Negotino (east), Čaška (west), and Kavadarci (south)—the latter hosting Southeast Europe's largest winery. Red varieties dominate, especially Vranec, North Macedonia's signature grape.
Today Rosoman cultivates both vineyards and peach orchards, the latter identified as particularly promising for future development. The Povardarie wine region extending along the Vardar River accounts for 87% of national vineyard area (24,664 hectares). Eighty-five percent of wine production exports, generating $65 million in 2022 and placing North Macedonia among the world's top 30 wine-exporting nations. Rosoman contributes to this output while remaining overshadowed by neighboring municipal centers.
By 2026, Rosoman's trajectory depends on whether smaller wine municipalities can capture value from the industry they enable. The large wineries in Kavadarci and Negotino process grapes grown across the region; whether Rosoman develops its own processing capacity or remains a grape supplier determines its economic share of Tikveš prosperity.
