Kriva Palanka exists where the Osogovo mountain massif concentrates mineral wealth at the tri-border junction of Macedonia, Serbia, and Bulgaria. This municipality of 18,059 residents in northeastern North Macedonia controls the Deve Bair crossing—the primary border point connecting Skopje to Sofia, ensuring constant heavy traffic through the town. The Toranica lead-zinc mine, 24 kilometers distant, commenced production in 1987 with annual output of 320,000 tons.
The formation era oscillated between Serbian rule (1912-1915, post-1918), Bulgarian control (1915-1918), and eventual incorporation into Yugoslavia and independent Macedonia. This contested history reflects the strategic value of the Osogovo mining district: deposits of lead, zinc, antimony, copper, silver, gold, bentonite clay, tuffs, quartz, and diatomaceous earth concentrate in municipal territory. The traditional Tromedja gathering on July 12 brings mountaineering societies from Kriva Palanka, Bosilegrad (Serbia), and Kyustendil (Bulgaria) to the tri-border point.
Today Kriva Palanka's economy reflects its geographic position and mineral endowment. Trade dominates due to Bulgarian border proximity; the Toranica mine and Bentomak extraction continue industrial activity; agriculture produces potatoes primarily, with corn, wheat, barley, rye, and oats supplementing. The town of 13,481 inhabitants serves as regional center while recent investment promotes tourism leveraging natural beauty and cultural heritage.
By 2026, Kriva Palanka benefits from its position on the Skopje-Sofia corridor as EU integration advances. The mining infrastructure, border commerce, and emerging tourism create economic diversification that many northeastern municipalities lack. The tri-border geography could enable cross-border cooperation development.
