Asni

Asni serves as the trailhead town for Jbel Toubkal (4,167m), North Africa's highest peak. The town exists because climbers need last supplies before ascending—mules for hire, guides, provisions. Tourism created this economy starting in the mid-20th century when European mountaineers began climbing Toubkal. Local Berber families shifted from subsistence farming to providing services: guiding, mule trekking, guesthouse operation. The 2023 earthquake affected Asni but less severely than Amizmiz; the town's economy recovered as trekking tourism resumed.
