Cimahi

TL;DR

Cimahi packs 584,222 people into 40.25 square kilometres, surviving beside Bandung by turning land scarcity into a niche for military and animation infrastructure.

City in West Java

By Alex Denne

Cimahi survives by being small, dense, and specialised rather than by trying to outgrow Bandung. The official story calls it a city of 584,222 people, 764 metres above sea level, in West Java, wedged between Bandung and Bandung Barat. What that misses is that Cimahi has only 40.25 square kilometres to work with. Density, not sprawl, is the city's business model.

The arithmetic is unforgiving. The city's own population service says Cimahi reached 584,222 residents in 2025, up from 581,994 in 2024. On 40.25 square kilometres, that means roughly 14,500 people per square kilometre, with whole districts already above that level and some neighbourhoods above 24,000. That forces hard resource allocation. Cimahi cannot compete as a broad industrial frontier, so it keeps doubling down on uses that fit tight urban space: military education and logistics inherited from the Dutch garrison era, manufacturing niches, and creative-digital work clustered around Cimahi Techno Park.

That is path dependence reinforced by niche construction. Barracks, rail links, and training grounds made Cimahi a military town first; city policy since 2009 has tried to add a second layer by making animation a flagship sector. Officials still describe Cimahi as a kota militer dan industri, while the city also keeps preparing an animation identity through workshops and UNESCO Creative Cities Network ambitions. In other words, Cimahi keeps converting a cramped inherited platform into specialised, high-turnover functions instead of chasing low-density growth it cannot host.

Biologically, Cimahi resembles a hummingbird. A hummingbird survives on a tiny frame by maintaining a very high metabolic rate and targeting concentrated energy sources instead of bulk feeding. Cimahi does the urban version. It packs people, institutions, and niche industries into a constrained footprint and survives through speed, density, and specialisation.

Underappreciated Fact

Cimahi fits 584,222 residents into just 40.25 square kilometres, which is why the city keeps specialising in dense functions rather than spreading outward.
