Shanxi
1.2B+ tonnes coal (2024, more than India); first voluntary reduction; 47% clean energy capacity; hydrogen from coke gas; 130 intelligent mines by 2025.
Shanxi mined 1.2+ billion tonnes of coal in 2024 (more than India)—voluntary reduction for first time after 7 years of rapid growth from 832M tonnes (2016) to 1.378B tonnes (2023). The province targets 5% GDP growth in 2025. Advanced coal production capacity reached 83%; unconventional natural gas exceeded 16.5 billion cubic meters (+12.7%). Energy consumption per GDP unit dropped 10.9% cumulatively since 2021 via intelligent mining. Clean energy installed capacity rose from 33.9% (2019) to 47.2% (H1 2024); electricity from clean sources increased from 18.1% to 28.2%. Datong's 50,000-mu solar base on former mining subsidence land generated 12+ billion kWh since 2016. Coke oven gas (~60% hydrogen) enables cost-effective hydrogen production; Jinnan Steel, Meijin Energy, and Pengfei entered hydrogen sector. The province plans 130 intelligent coal mines in 2025. ~10% of residents work in coal industry.
