Yueyang

TL;DR

A city of 1.064 million with a 1 million-TEU port, Yueyang is Hunan's intake valve for petrochemicals, logs, grain, and containers.

City in Hunan

By Alex Denne

Yueyang's port crossed 1 million TEUs in 2022, yet the city is still more famous in Chinese culture for a tower and an essay than for its container yards. The urban area sits 43 metres above sea level beside Dongting Lake and has a verified metro population of about 1.064 million, above the older GeoNames figure. Officially Yueyang is a historic Hunan city on the Yangtze system.

What that picture undersells is that Yueyang is Hunan's intake valve. Chenglingji Port is the province's only true port city gateway; it handled 1 million TEUs in 2022 and another 572,500 in the first half of 2023. Hunan's official 2024 profile for Yueyang lists GDP of ¥512.766 billion ($70.8 billion), with petrochemicals and electromechanical equipment at the core, but the trade mix is even more revealing: imports of ¥44.95 billion versus exports of ¥8.887 billion. Yueyang does not merely make things. It pulls logs, grain, chemicals, and containers inland, sorts them, and redistributes them across central China. Remove that node and Hunan loses its shortest waterborne link to the Yangtze and beyond.

Army ant is the right organism for Yueyang. Army ants do not dominate by hoarding; they dominate by keeping columns in motion and building temporary bridges exactly where traffic must pass. Yueyang does the urban equivalent. Network effects matter because the lake, river, railways, and port get more useful together than apart. Keystone-species dynamics matter because Hunan has only one city that can play this role at scale. Resource allocation matters because the city continually decides which cargos, industrial inputs, and port investments get scarce berth, rail, and customs capacity.

Underappreciated Fact

Yueyang is Hunan's only port city and handled 1 million TEUs in 2022, making it a logistics hinge more than a scenic lake stop.
