Huangshi

Huangshi stopped being just a copper city when it learned to sell the layers built on top of copper. The city sits 22 metres above sea level on the Yangtze and its verified population is about 821,445, well above the old GeoNames core-city figure of 688,090. Officially Huangshi in southeastern Hubei is known for mining and metallurgy, with Daye's copper and iron history shaping its identity.

The more useful fact is that Huangshi has spent the last decade converting that metals legacy into one of China's major printed-circuit-board clusters. City data say electronic information has grown into a ¥275.7 billion industry with more than 110 major firms, while Huangshi now describes itself as the country's third-largest PCB cluster. The upstream logic is local: copper smelting and materials know-how already existed. The downstream logic is cluster economics. In 2026 the city said 31 key PCB manufacturers, 15 materials suppliers, and 41 testing, drilling, and support firms were already concentrated there. Major investors keep deepening the specialization. Huangshi Hushi Electronics alone signed another ¥3.6 billion investment in 2025 for AI-server and AI-chip high-end PCB lines, after earlier rounds had already pushed cumulative investment above ¥7 billion.

That is path dependence first. Huangshi did not invent a tech city from scratch; it climbed up its own mineral value chain. Network effects came next. Once foil, boards, drilling, inspection, and equipment suppliers were close together, each new plant made the city more useful for the next one. Niche construction completed the shift: industrial parks, financing, and policy support built a habitat where a former mining city could behave like an electronics platform.

The biological analogy is the termite. Termites turn low-value plant matter into a durable, climate-controlled system through specialization and constant material processing. Huangshi does something similar with copper and electronics. Its advantage is not the mine alone, but the engineered colony that keeps turning base material into higher-value layers.
