Joinville is Santa Catarina's largest city, but it behaves like a port cluster disguised as a municipality. The city has 654,888 residents in the IBGE 2024 estimate, sits just 9 metres above sea level in northern Santa Catarina, and is usually introduced as the state's biggest municipality and a dance-festival city. That is all true. The Wikipedia gap is that Joinville's real advantage is logistical ecology, not branding.
The municipality's own business case makes the structure plain. Joinville says it sits between six operating ports: Sao Francisco do Sul 61 kilometres away, Itapoa 79, Navegantes 88, Itajai 93, Paranagua 125, and Antonina 156. Lauro Carneiro de Loyola Airport is only 13 kilometres from the city centre. That means manufacturers are not captive to one harbour, one carrier, or one route.
