City in State of Parana

By Alex Denne

Most travelers who think they have landed in Curitiba are already in another municipality. Afonso Pena, the airport that sells Paraná's capital to the world, sits in São José dos Pinhais, and that branding mismatch is the city's real business model.

São José dos Pinhais sits at 882 metres on Curitiba's eastern edge and IBGE estimates 349,880 residents. Standard descriptions call it part of the metropolitan region and note a diversified industrial base. The deeper fact is that it functions as the intake valve for the wider Curitiba economy. Paraná's 2025 summary of IBGE data places it among the state's eight largest municipal economies; a prior state analysis put its share at 4.9% of Paraná GDP, unusually high for a municipality better known outside the state only because the airport borrows Curitiba's name.

That airport is not symbolic. Between January and November 2024, Afonso Pena handled 164,148 international embarkations and disembarkations, up 87.3% year on year, while new nonstop routes doubled the number of direct international connections. Around the runways sits one of Brazil's densest auto-production zones. Renault's Complexo Industrial Ayrton Senna, opened in 1998, has exported more than 1 million vehicles from Paraná. Volkswagen is investing R$ 3 billion in its local plant, which has already produced more than 3 million vehicles and supplies about 18 countries in Latin America and Africa. Audi reopened and modernized its plant here with a R$ 100 million investment in 2022.

The biological parallel is mycorrhizal fungi. The fungus rarely gets the forest's headline, but it becomes indispensable by moving nutrients between roots. São José dos Pinhais behaves the same way. Source-sink dynamics pull passengers, parts, and capital into one node; network effects keep manufacturers, suppliers, and logistics providers clustering around the same airport-and-highway web; niche construction turns a neighboring municipality into a strategic interface the larger metropolis cannot easily replace.

Underappreciated Fact

Curitiba's main airport is actually in São José dos Pinhais, where Afonso Pena handled 164,148 international passengers in the first 11 months of 2024.
