Salta

TL;DR

A city of 627,704 anchoring 25,000-tonne and 20,000-tonne lithium plants, Salta is the service nest that turns remote brines into export chemistry.

City in Salta Province

By Alex Denne

Salta sells churches and vineyards to tourists, but its newer signature product is 25,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide a year. The city sits 1,054 metres above sea level in the Lerma Valley and had 627,704 residents in the 2022 census, well above the older GeoNames figure. Officially Salta is the provincial capital and one of Argentina's best-known colonial cities.

What the postcard misses is that Salta has become the administrative valley floor for the high-altitude lithium triangle. In October 2024, POSCO opened Argentina's first commercial lithium hydroxide plant at General Guemes Industrial Park, with annual capacity of 25,000 tonnes and more than US$800 million invested. In February 2025, Ganfeng opened a 20,000-tonne lithium chloride plant in the same industrial orbit after a US$980 million investment; the company said development had generated about 11,600 jobs and that roughly 500 people were working across the salar, plant, and Salta offices. The city does not extract brine itself. It does something more durable: it houses the lawyers, engineers, customs managers, hotels, universities, and provincial state capacity that let remote salt-flat projects function. The old westward logic still matters too. The Salta-Antofagasta railway and Route 51 corridor continue to connect the city to Chilean Pacific outlets and the Puna.

Ant is the right organism for Salta. Ant colonies do not live where food is found; they build a base, send specialised workers outward, and keep replenishing the route back to the nest. Salta works the same way. Path dependence matters because the city has spent centuries handling Andean corridor traffic and is now reusing that role for battery minerals. Resource allocation matters because value is constantly shifted between high-altitude extraction, valley processing, and city services. Network effects matter because every new plant, supplier, and corridor upgrade makes Salta a more useful coordination node for the next one.

Underappreciated Fact

Salta's real edge is not scenic tourism but its role as the service nest for lithium projects that process 45,000 tonnes a year of battery chemicals nearby.
