Early computers drew graphics laboriously: the CPU calculated every pixel, sent values to memory, and repeated the process fast enough to avoid flicker. This worked for simple displays, but as resolutions increased and graphics became more complex, the CPU couldn't keep up—it spent all its time pushing pixels instead of running programs. The solution was to offload display generation to dedicated hardware: the video display controller (VDC).

The adjacent possible assembled through arcade games and home computers. Arcade machines like Galaxian (1979) used custom chips to handle sprite graphics—small moving objects that the hardware could position and animate without CPU involvement. Home computers needed similar capabilities for smooth scrolling, color management, and text display. Texas Instruments' TMS9918 (1979) became influential, powering the MSX standard and ColecoVision. NEC's μPD7220 (1981) added advanced features like line drawing and area fills executed in hardware.

These chips marked a fundamental architectural shift. Instead of the CPU treating the display as dumb memory, the VDC became an intelligent coprocessor. It maintained its own memory for frame buffers and sprite definitions. It generated video signals at precise timing required by CRT monitors. It handled color lookup tables, scrolling offsets, and collision detection. The CPU issued high-level commands; the VDC executed them autonomously.

The Japanese market particularly drove VDC innovation because of kanji display requirements. Rendering thousands of complex Chinese characters required hardware font storage and dedicated text-rendering circuits. NEC's PC-98 series, dominant in Japan through the 1990s, featured sophisticated VDCs that could display multiple text layers with different character sets—capabilities that influenced later developments.

The cascade from VDCs led directly to GPUs. As 3D graphics emerged in the 1990s, dedicated chips took on increasingly complex geometry calculations, texture mapping, and rendering. NVIDIA's GeForce (1999) and ATI's Radeon marked the transition from 2D-focused VDCs to fully programmable graphics processors. The original insight—that display generation should be hardware-accelerated—evolved into today's GPUs, which have become so powerful they now accelerate everything from machine learning to cryptocurrency mining. The humble VDC's offloading principle became the foundation for parallel computing.
