1970 – 2000

The Digital era transformed information from analog to binary, enabling computation, storage, and communication at scales previously impossible. The microprocessor (1971) put computing power on single chips; personal computers (1970s-80s) brought computation to desks; the internet (1980s-90s) connected them all. Moore's Law—transistor density doubling every two years—drove exponential improvement for decades. This era exhibits network effects stronger than any before: each additional internet user made the network more valuable for all others. Modularity enabled recombination—standardized protocols and APIs let innovations build on each other. The biological parallel is neural network evolution—distributed processing, redundancy, and plasticity. By 2000, email, search engines, and e-commerce had transformed business; mobile phones were beginning their own revolution.
