Taxonomy

Species

The fundamental unit of biological classification—a group of organisms capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring, or defined by distinct genetic and morphological characteristics.

Biological Context

The biological species concept (interbreeding) doesn't apply to asexual organisms, fossils, or organisms separated by geography. Alternative concepts use morphology, genetics, or ecology. Species are the basic units counted in biodiversity assessments and the level at which extinction occurs.
