Mathematics

Self-Similarity

The property where a pattern or structure looks the same at different scales—zooming in reveals the same basic structure. A defining characteristic of fractals.

Biological Context

Fern fronds are self-similar: each leaflet looks like a miniature version of the whole frond. River networks, branching blood vessels, and tree canopies all show approximate self-similarity. Self-similar structures often arise from simple iterative growth rules.

Business Application

Successful organizations often show self-similarity: the same values and operating principles at team level, division level, and company level.
