Ecology
r-Strategist
A species adapted for rapid reproduction and population growth in unstable or unpredictable environments. Characterized by many small offspring, little parental care, and short lifespans.
Biological Context
The 'r' comes from the intrinsic rate of natural increase. Bacteria, insects, and weeds are r-strategists. They colonize disturbed habitats quickly but are often outcompeted in stable environments. r-strategists invest in quantity over quality of offspring.
Business Application
Startups often follow r-strategy: launch many products quickly, invest little in each, expect most to fail, bet that a few will succeed. High volume, low investment per attempt.
