Physiology
Ketosis
A metabolic state where the body burns fat for fuel instead of glucose, producing ketone bodies as an alternative energy source.
Biological Context
Ketosis occurs during fasting, carbohydrate restriction, or prolonged exercise when glucose is depleted. The liver converts fatty acids to ketones, which can fuel the brain and muscles. Ketosis is distinct from dangerous ketoacidosis (uncontrolled in diabetes). Many organisms routinely enter ketosis during food scarcity.
Business Application
Organizational ketosis: operating on alternative fuel sources when primary revenue streams are depleted—using reserves, selling assets, or finding creative funding. A temporary survival mode, not a sustainable strategy.
