Imbibition

The absorption of water by a seed, the first step in germination. Water uptake triggers metabolic reactivation after dormancy.

Biological Context

Dry seeds can be remarkably long-lived (some viable after centuries) because metabolism is suspended. Imbibition rehydrates cells and activates enzymes. Seeds can increase to 2-3 times their dry weight through water absorption. The process is initially passive, driven by the seed's low water potential.

Business Application

Business imbibition: dormant capabilities absorbing resources before becoming active. A shelved project that receives funding, a paused initiative that gains executive attention—imbibition precedes active growth.
