Biological Context

Hypoxia in water bodies often results from eutrophication—excessive nutrients fuel algal blooms, and decomposition of dead algae consumes oxygen. The Gulf of Mexico 'dead zone' is a hypoxic area caused by nutrient runoff from the Mississippi River basin.
