Chemistry

Hydrophilic

Water-loving or water-attracting. Hydrophilic molecules dissolve easily in water and form hydrogen bonds with water molecules.

Biological Context

Sugars, salts, and the outer surfaces of cell membranes are hydrophilic. Most biochemical reactions occur in aqueous (water-based) environments. Hydrophilic surfaces of proteins face outward toward the cell's watery interior.
