Heterotroph
From Greek 'hetero' (other) + 'trophe' (nourishment)
An organism that cannot produce its own food and must consume other organisms for energy and nutrients. Includes all animals, fungi, and many bacteria.
Biological Context
Heterotrophs depend on autotrophs directly (herbivores) or indirectly (carnivores, decomposers). They break down organic compounds produced by others to obtain energy and building blocks for growth.
