Epidemiology

Epidemic

A disease outbreak affecting many individuals in a community or region at the same time, spreading rapidly and exceeding normal expected levels.

Biological Context

Epidemics occur when disease transmission exceeds the rate at which infected individuals recover or die. They can emerge when new pathogens appear, populations lose immunity, or conditions favor transmission. Epidemics typically peak and decline as susceptible hosts become rare.
