Edge Effect

Changes in population or community structures that occur at the boundary of two or more habitats. Edges often have higher species diversity but can also expose species to threats.

Biological Context

Forest edges have more light, different temperatures, and different species than forest interiors. Some species thrive at edges; others are harmed by edge effects (forest-interior birds suffer from increased nest predation at edges). Habitat fragmentation increases edge effects.

Business Application

Business edge effects: the boundaries of organizations are where external threats and opportunities are first encountered. Sales teams, customer service, and business development operate at the edge, experiencing conditions different from the organizational 'interior.'
