Ectothermy

A metabolic strategy where body temperature depends primarily on external heat sources rather than internal metabolism. Also called 'cold-bloodedness,' though body temperature can be quite high.

Biological Context

Ectotherms (reptiles, fish, insects) need only 10% of the food that same-sized endotherms require. This efficiency allows larger populations in resource-limited environments. However, ectotherms are limited by environmental temperatures and may be inactive in cold conditions.

Business Application

Ectothermic organizations depend on external energy (market conditions, funding) rather than generating their own. They're efficient but vulnerable to external changes. Endothermic organizations maintain activity regardless of conditions but require constant resource consumption.
