Consumer

An organism that obtains energy by eating other organisms. Includes herbivores (eat plants), carnivores (eat animals), and omnivores (eat both).

Biological Context

Primary consumers eat producers; secondary consumers eat primary consumers; tertiary consumers eat secondary consumers. Energy is lost at each transfer, limiting food chain length. Consumers drive nutrient cycling and shape producer communities through selective feeding.
