Neuroscience
Connectome
A comprehensive map of neural connections in a brain or nervous system. The complete wiring diagram showing how neurons connect to each other.
Biological Context
The only complete connectome mapped so far is C. elegans, a roundworm with exactly 302 neurons and about 7,000 connections. Human connectome projects aim to map the brain's 86 billion neurons and 100 trillion connections. The connectome determines information flow and emergent cognitive capabilities.
Business Application
Organizational connectomes: mapping how information actually flows through a company versus the formal org chart. Shadow networks often matter more than official structures. Understanding the real connectome reveals bottlenecks, influencers, and communication pathways.
