Plant Biology

Chlorophyll

The green pigment in plants that captures light energy for photosynthesis. Chlorophyll absorbs red and blue light, reflecting green—which is why plants appear green.

Biological Context

Chlorophyll is located in chloroplasts. Its molecular structure includes a magnesium atom. Plants with more chlorophyll can photosynthesize more efficiently. Autumn colors appear when chlorophyll breaks down, revealing other pigments.

Business Application

Organizational chlorophyll: the revenue-generating activities that capture energy (money) from the environment. Organizations need sufficient 'chlorophyll' to power all other activities.
