Neuroscience
Axon
The long, slender projection of a neuron that conducts electrical impulses away from the cell body toward other neurons or target cells. The output side of a neuron.
Biological Context
Axons can be very long—motor neuron axons extend from the spinal cord to muscles in the feet. Many axons are wrapped in myelin, which speeds signal transmission. The axon terminal releases neurotransmitters to communicate with the next cell.
Business Application
Organizational axons are the channels that transmit decisions outward—communication systems, chain of command, implementation pathways. Long axons (extended supply chains, distant subsidiaries) require more infrastructure to function reliably.
