Asymptote
A value that a function approaches but never quite reaches. In biology, often describes limits that populations or processes approach but don't exceed.
Biological Context
Carrying capacity is an asymptote for logistic growth—populations approach but fluctuate around it. Enzyme reaction rates approach a maximum asymptotically as substrate increases. Recognizing asymptotic behavior reveals natural limits.
