WIP Limits
Origin: Kanban
Biological Parallel
Carrying capacity defines the maximum population an environment can sustain—exceed it and resources collapse, triggering die-off. WIP limits are organizational carrying capacity: the system's maximum sustainable throughput before quality degrades and cycle time explodes. Bacterial populations that overshoot carrying capacity don't produce more bacteria; they produce dead bacteria. Context-switching costs and coordination overhead are your system's resource constraints.
